Our History
1983-Today
After petitioning for and helping raise funds for the construction of a library in northwest Harris County, Marsha Carlevaro founded the Friends of the Northwest Branch Library with the first meeting in October 1983.
In January 1984, Marsha’s Friends of the Library led a group of 900 volunteers going door to door through Cypress subdivisions asking for book and cash donations, followed up by a book sale with books collected from 65 subdivisions.
By the time the library opened in May 1984 the door-to-door funding drive and book sale had, along with private donations, raised $60,000 to greatly expand the library book collection.
In the 40+ years since then, the Friends of the Northwest Branch Library have continued running book sales and performing community outreach to provide funds for Northwest Branch Library. Funds have been used for various community craft program and performances for children, teens, and adults, as well as purchasing equipment to support continued growth of the Library.
